Every successful project starts long before the first piece of equipment ever reaches the field. For one recent project in northern Alberta, spanning approximately 20 kilometres, Confluence Environment was brought in early to support route optimization and ground truthing efforts.
The objective: identify the most efficient, constructible, and environmentally responsible route possible to provide greater project certainty and avoid unnecessary cost.
From Desktop to Field: Finding the Best Path Forward
Our work began with a comprehensive desktop review utilizing all available spatial data sources, government databases, pre-existing mapped constraints, and aerial imagery. This early analysis helps clients visualize where environmental sensitivities may exist, such as watercourses, wetlands, wildlife habitats, or topographical challenges, and narrow in on existing corridors that minimize impact.
Once a preliminary route is identified via desktop, we take those insights into the field to validate and “ground truth” the data (i.e., field verify). This is where local conditions, access challenges, and on-the-ground environmental features can confirm or refine the route.
